Ok if you want a short answer for what is the best break up book then it’s It’s Called a Breakup Because It’s Broken: The Smart Girl’s Break-Up Buddy, but read on there’s more.
There are many different kinds of breakup books. Whether it`s novels that allow you to re-live the situation in another characters/place or a self-help guide for advice on how to move on, any of these books can be helpful. There is also a growing trend of books for breakups that actually coach you on reversing the situation. However not many books of this nature actually make sense. I have noticed that many of the books advertised on the internet about breakups, are actually edited and created by teenagers or other people with no expertise on the subject. To know how to bring your spouse back you have to at least know what it is like to have one. I assume you get my point.
Best breakup books are written by recognized authors or people with background in human psychology, social relations or family counselling. So the main question is “What is a breakup book supposed to do?”
It is supposed to offer solace, comfort and support. Beware of books that advertise unrealistic results, such as “Getting over an ex in 24 hours” or “Editing the relationship history”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that neither of the goals are reachable. You cannot undo what was done, and re-write history, neither can you heal your heart thoroughly in a day.
A good break up book will give you tools to analyze and understand your relationship and subsequently the break up. You will be able to reflect on the situation profoundly and learn the lessons that life has to offer. Some cases of break ups are worst than others and the way to go about them will also vary. For example grieving a 30 year old marriage will require a different healing process that your first teenage break up. The intensity of the break up is the determining factor in the length of the recovery process and the depth of your soul searching and necessary counselling. A breakup book can either teach you how to accept and learn from the reality, or coach you on the ways to rebuild the broken pieces, before it’s too late. I have found only one book that thoroughly covers the subject and gives great advice along the way, it’s called The Magic of Making Up
Allan K. Chalmers:
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.
Do something today : read to help yourself
Love someone today : yourself
Hope for something today : for the love to find you tomorrow.
You can do it!
